Career

Brown went to school with Walter Dean Myers when he was a young kid in Harlem. His first major role was as a nightclub publicist and performer on the television show Laugh-in. For the prologue, Brown recalls how Norman Lear considered him for the role of Lamont in Sanford and Son, but he was unavailable due to a previous contract with Laugh-In, causing Lear to cast Demond Wilson instead.

In 1961, his debut Columbia Records single was ‘Walkin’, Talkin’, Kissin’ Doll’ backed with ‘Sundown.’ He had just been 23 at that time. He also released the advertising edition with a special insert that explained his origins. His next album was “Don’t Dilly Dally, Dolly” backed with “You’re Too Much in Love With Yourself” published by Crest Records.
